Most loyalty programs allow you to earn miles or points not just with the airline itself but also with partner airlines within the alliance to which the airline belongs.
Many programs also enable members to earn mile or points with airlines that fall outside these categories, and Singapore Airlines KrisFlyer is no different.
You can earn KrisFlyer miles on flights with the following non-Star Alliance airline partners:
- Alaska Airlines: US airline which merged with Virgin America and a Qantas Frequent Flyer partner
- JetBlue: US airline with a reputation for good customer service in both Economy and Business Class
- Olympic Air: Regional subsidiary of Greek Star Alliance member Aegean Airlines
- Scoot: Singapore-based low-cost carrier owned by Singapore Airlines; merged with Tigerair Singapore in 2017
- Virgin Atlantic: London-based mainly international airline
- Virgin Australia: Australia’s second-largest airline
- Vistara: Indian airline mainly flying domestically but also to Bangkok, Dubai and Singapore
How to earn KrisFlyer miles on Scoot flights
Scoot flies from Sydney, Melbourne, Perth and the Gold Coast to Singapore and onward mainly to Asia (especially China) but also to Athens, Berlin and Jeddah.
It’s quite a simple earn rate: 1 KrisFlyer mile per 1 SGD spent. The Singaporean Dollar is usually quite close to parity with the Australian Dollar.
Therefore, if you purchase a one-way flight from Australia to Singapore with Scoot for AU$200, you’ll earn ~200 KrisFlyer miles. With our points valuations, that’s only worth $3.60, but it’s better than nothing!
Important note:
- If you book an itinerary with a combination of a Scoot and Singapore Airlines, SilkAir or Virgin Australia flight, your Scoot flight will earn miles according to the actual distance flown and fare class—see the table here
How to earn KrisFlyer miles on Virgin Australia and other non-alliance partner airlines
To earn KrisFlyer miles with Alaska Airlines, JetBlue, Olympic Air, Virgin Atlantic, Virgin Australia and Vistara, the number of miles earned will depend on your fare class.
Business Class fares attract 125% of miles flown for most partners but for Virgin Australia, the earn rate is a higher 200%. Premium Economy and full-fare Economy tickets generally attract a 100% earn rate and Discount Economy half of that.
For more specific info, check out the last page of KrisFlyer’s non-Star Alliance partner award chart.
You’ll want to have a think about where your points allegiances lie. For example, most Virgin Australia fares to Hong Kong and Los Angeles earn exactly the same number of Velocity Points and KrisFlyer miles. So it really depends which program you are trying to build a balance with.
Important note:
- Some Premium Economy (W), Discount Economy (T) and senior citizen/group travel (V) fare classes do not qualify when flying domestically within Australia or to the Pacific Islands with Virgin Australia
Summing up
Crediting airline miles can be complicated at times. So, before you fly, it is best to ensure with the airline that the fare class you have booked is eligible for miles accrual.
And, most importantly, make sure that you enter your KrisFlyer membership number when you make your booking or before you get to the airport if you can.
