Also, keep in mind that Virgin Australia and Rex often offer sharply-priced fares on domestic routes. It might still be better value to book those than to use your Qantas Points.
To work out the rough value of your points, you can subtract the taxes of the reward fare from the cost of the cash fare, and then divide by the number of points used.
For example, Perth to Sydney is currently 12,600 Qantas Points + $44 one-way in Economy (usually 18,000 points). Virgin Australia’s lowest fare with luggage that day is $319.
That gives your Qantas Points a value of 2.18 cents each for this redemption – higher than our valuation of 1.90 cents each. In this case, using Qantas Points for the discounted reward seat would be a good deal.

last year we went to Exmouth to swim with whale sharks – even on sale the flights from exmouth to perth were the most expensive part of the holiday – so this offer could be perfect.

I understand using points for flights does not add status credits but does it count as a segment flown to help reach new tier?
E.g. in your BNE-LAX example, you would be charged $600 odd in taxes on top of the 67,500 points. This means the $2000 cash fare should be reduced down to $1400 for the purpose of $/point calculation.
($2000 – $600) / 67,500 points = a meager 2 cents per point, not 3 cents per point.
This also means most AU domestic flights would struggle to reach even 1.5 cents per point in value except for the monopoly routes.
Great article. Just a quick question, it says in the table that a redemption for a Sydney to Melbourne is 8000 points then discounted down to 6000. I’ve searched a variety of dates and I’m finding nothing below 18000 points for one way. Am I doing something wrong?
According to the above, Jetstar flights are not included as part of the promotion. Which makes a QF redemption cheaper than a JQ one
