EnergyAustralia have joined forces with American Express to offer 10,000 Membership Rewards points for new account-holders of their gas or electricity plans.
This offer is definitely not an easy one to assess, with every state’s different energy pricing regulations and everyone’s individual needs meaning you’ll have to compare against your current plan or other potential new suppliers to be sure the points are worth it.
The points are available for new accounts requested up to April 8th, and will credit after your first bill is paid. 10,000 Membership Rewards points is a decent bonus, so it’s worth considering.
You’ll need to have Amex set as your bill payment option after signing up, and commit to a 12 month plan minimum.

I couldn’t find offer pages for the other states, so if you have a link to one please share and I’ll update.
after exchanging a few emails with EA, they said I am eligible for the bonus points even as an existing customer.
now, I just gotta work out if this is worth it, if I sign up for this offer, my electricity/gas rates and supply charge will go up by a little, after the discounts, I will end up saving maybe $20 per 90 days bill, and I will be locked in for 12 months (apparently no exit fees)
will also be shopping around as well, it is even worst that credit card shopping……..
also, I didn’t even realised that EA accepts Amex, but after triple checking my last bill, looks like I could pay with Amex by phone……….. last time I paid a bill by phone was probably back in the 90’s!
Also if you sign up on the Energy Australia website you get $50 credit, 17% off pay on time discount and an extra 2% for signing up online. so this 10,000 points are not really worth it.
Paying with Amex Plat Edge only gives 0.5 MR points per $1.
I suppose, until the 10k MR points are received, switch to other cards to pay the bill.
Also, I believe this is targeted. Note the wording (from the NSW offer fine print) “first successful payment with EnergyAustralia on the eligible American Express Card”
I’ve received the offer but didn’t see what Keith has mentioned above.
On the 12 month mininum, you might be right – I saw
But maybe points are available for uncommitted plans as well?
