There was somewhat of a unique race out at Avalon Airport last week.
A Tesla Model S in “Ludicrous Mode” vs a Qantas 737-800 hurtling down a 3km runway, somewhat ironically promoting sustainability.
What does Ludicrous Mode mean? Oh not much- just the ability to get from 0 to 100 kilometres an hour in three seconds.
Who won the race is moot (it was the Tesla until the plane took off), with the point of the exercise being to showcase Qantas and Tesla’s collaboration to “drive innovation for their customers and sustainability in the transport industry.”
For many of us, that won’t mean much in the short term. For those who own, or are looking to buy a Tesla Model S, you’ve got some nice perks coming your way.
Not only is complimentary Qantas Club membership on the table, but also Tesla High Power Wall Connectors at Sydney, Melbourne, Brisbane and Adelaide Qantas Valet facilities. There will also be “Exclusive events for Qantas frequent flyers, enabling them to experience new Tesla vehicles and technology”.
The Tesla S starts at over $100,000, so I think it’s fair to say that although there aren’t that many Tesla S owners, one could safely assume that the bulk of them would be attractive customers for Qantas to have.
As part of Qantas’ commitment to their Future Planet Program, the airline will also be offsetting Tesla’s domestic corporate travel emissions, with Qantas being Tesla’s airline of choice under the agreement.
