By being aware of the latest Qantas Travel Money promotions, you could bring home more than just souvenirs and memories from your next trip abroad. Of course, the card allows you to earn Qantas Points when you spend. But quite often, you can double dip, by earning points when you load this pre-paid card.
Here’s how to make those international spends even more rewarding – perhaps, before you’ve even left home.
Current Qantas Travel Money promotion: Earn up to 30,000 bonus Qantas Points
Expiry: register and load by 11:59 pm (AEST), 29 September 2023 |
Normally, the Qantas Travel Money card provides points when you spend – but this promotion is a little different. Being a pre-paid card, you top-up your balance first, before spending. And under this deal, load at least AU$500 onto your account in a foreign currency and you can be rewarded.
First, register for the offer before loading. You can then receive 1.5 Qantas Points per AU$1 loaded onto the card into a foreign currency account. On a simple top-up of AU$500, that’s 750 bonus Qantas Points in your pocket – before you’ve really spent a cent.
You can earn up to 30,000 bonus Qantas Points via this promotion. That’s achieved by loading AU$20,000 onto your Qantas Travel Money card, directly in a foreign currency. Of course, you’ll also earn Qantas Points when you spend that dough. That’s another 1.5 Qantas Points per AU$1 equivalent spent abroad.
From a top-up of AU$20,000, you could ultimately earn 60,000 total Qantas Points. That’s 30,000 bonus Qantas Points under this deal, plus 30,000 Qantas Points when transacting abroad (1.5 Qantas Points per AU$1 spent). All told, that’s three Qantas Points per AU$1 spent.

Summing Up
If you’re going to use the Qantas Travel Money card as part of your international spending strategy, it pays to top-up your account during a promotion. By keeping an eye on your email inbox – and the Point Hacks site – you could turbocharge your rewards.
It’s worth pointing out that while this card allows you to earn points, the foreign exchange rates may be less generous than on other travel cards. On the plus side, you can lock-in your exchange rate before you go – by pre-loading funds into a desired currency – to avoid any surprises on the road. But using a regular credit card may cost you less overall, while still earning points.
Only you can decide whether the Qantas Points you could earn via the Qantas Travel Money card are worth the haircut taken on the exchange rate. Remembering, of course, that many points-earning credit cards impose a 3% foreign transaction fee nonetheless.

I only use the Macquarie bank transaction Mastercard debit card now, fee free and 0% intl currency fee. The Mastercard wholesale exchange rate is often better than visa equivalent too, and waaaay better than any rate you’d get through the qantas travel card. No intl ATM fees also, unless the Intl ATM operator charges a fee.

But I’ve done the sums, spreadsheets and all, don’t use the qantas travel card, you can thank my OCD later.
Its now August and I’m still chasing the bonus points which I haven’t received despite many emails and calls and getting told it will be sorted as they pass you between Qantas FF, Qantas Money Cards, and the Promoter.
It seems they don’t honor the bonus points and i’m not the only one who has complained.
