With the impending US Airways and AAdvantage merger in 2015, their loyalty programs are becoming ever closer together. They both still operate different award charts, with different strengths and weaknesses, but their promotions and price of frequent miles are both in sync. The guide for AAdvantage mileage purchases is here, while for US Airways it’s here.
The current promotion will yield 45,000 bonus miles at the top end purchase of 80,000 miles for $2360 USD. It ends in a few days on November 30th, so it’s worth considering whether you want to get in there now, as while the cost of US Airways miles isn’t going down anytime soon, there are still a bunch of uses to be had for them – and they will be transferrable over to AAdvantage when their frequent flyer programs merge.
If you were to purchase the maximum 80,000 miles in either program, you’d then receive 45,000 bonus miles for $2360. This comes out at 1.88 cents per mile and a maximum purchase of 125,000 miles, enough to get you from Australia to most destinations globally in Business Class, return.

So these promotions are definitely still worth considering – it will be interesting to see how these play out in future with the programs coming more closely aligned.
