IHG have released their yearly revaluation of some of their properties, with the majority of changes being price increases in the US but also four properties in Australia.
If you are looking to use your IHG Rewards points for a redemption at an InterContinental property, it may be wise to book sooner rather than later. Bookings can be made ~350 days in advance.
The InterContinental Hong Kong is going up in price soon
There’s no cancellation fee for booking hotels using IHG Rewards points, so if you have the points and think you may want to make a booking speculatively, you should do it ASAP as it is unclear when the pricing changes will be enacted.
Here’s the price changes for Australian hotels that are affected:
Across the world, here are the changes in brief:
- 499 properties are going up in price (up to 10k), tending to be InterContinentals and Holiday Inns
- 192 are going down (up to 5k), being mostly Holiday Inns and Crowne Plazas
- 70% of the hotels affected are in the US
- The top tier increased from 50k in 2015 to 60k last year and now 70k this year
Summing up
Have a look at the full list of changes.
If there is a property you are interested in going up in price, like the InterContinentals in Hong Kong, San Francisco, New York Times Square or London Park Lane (soon to be 70k per night), then it may be wise to book before the changes come into effect.
If the property will be going down in price, you could wait to book after the changes, or you could lock in a reservation now, cancel the reservation and re-book at the lower price.
Remember that some of the best value from IHG Rewards points comes from their quarterly PointBreaks promotion.
A common way to get your hands on IHG Rewards points is by buying them.
